Meanings

1. 1

   An expression used to indicate that the following content is proportional to the preceding content or of a similar level or quantity.

   뒤에 오는 말이 앞에 오는 말과 비례하거나 비슷한 정도 혹은 수량임을 나타내는 표현.

2. 2

   An expression used to indicate that the preceding statement is the reason or basis for the following statement.

   앞에 오는 말이 뒤에 오는 말의 이유나 근거임을 나타내는 표현.

• 모든 일에는 노력한 만큼 결과가 따르는 법이니 열심히 해야 한다.

  In everything, results follow in proportion to your effort, so you should work hard.

• 지수는 봉사 활동을 하느라 바쁘고 힘들었지만 힘든 만큼 보람도 컸다.

• 승규는 자동차로 출퇴근을 하는데 회사가 먼 만큼 기름값이 많이 든다.

  Seunggyu commutes by car, and since his office is far away, he spends a lot on gas.

• 민준이는 열심히 저축을 해서 어렵게 유학을 간 만큼 열심히 공부하고 돌아왔다.

  Minjun saved diligently to study abroad with great difficulty, and he studied just as hard once he got there.

• 요즘은 취업하기가 어려운 만큼 학생들이 대학을 졸업하기 전에 취업 준비를 철저히 한다.

  Since finding a job is so hard these days, students thoroughly prepare for employment before graduating.
