Meanings

1. 1

   An expression used to convey one's intention.

   의지의 내용을 전할 때 쓰는 표현.

   ※ 주로 '결심하다', '말하다' 등의 동사와 함께 쓰고, ‘ㄹ’을 제외한 받침 있는 동사 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

2. 2

   An expression used to convey one's guess.

   추측의 내용을 전할 때 쓰는 표현.

   ※ 주로 '믿다', '생각하다', '보다' 등의 동사와 함께 쓰고, ‘ㄹ’을 제외한 받침 있는 동사와 형용사 또는 ‘-었-’, '-겠-' 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

Examples

• 김 형사는 이번 사건의 범인을 반드시 잡으리라고 다짐했다.

  Detective Kim vowed that he would definitely catch the culprit of this case.

• 민준이는 고향에 부모님과 함께 살 집을 지으리라고 마음을 먹었다.

  Minjun made up his mind that he would build a house back home to live in with his parents.

• 나는 다시는 승규의 거짓말을 믿지 않으리라고 다짐했지만 또 속고 말았다.

  I vowed I would never again believe Seunggyu's lies, but I ended up getting fooled again.

• 지수가 다이어트를 시작했다며? 응. 올여름에는 비키니를 입으리라고 하던데.

  I heard Jisu started a diet? Yeah. She said she's going to wear a bikini this summer.

• 난 지수가 일부러 그랬으리라고 생각하지 않아.

  I don't think Jisu did that on purpose.

• 면접에 붙으리라고 기대는 안 했지만 막상 떨어지니 서운하다.

  I didn't really expect to pass the interview, but now that I've actually failed, I feel disappointed.
