Attaches to a noun ending in a consonant (를 after a vowel) to mark it as the direct object of a verb, or to mark a destination, means, or starting point of an action; it can also add emphasis. In casual speech, 를 often contracts onto the preceding syllable (e.g. 편지를 → 편질).
