Attaches to a verb stem (or -은가 for an adjective) to contrast two different cases or aspects side by side, often listing opposite examples within the same category; formal, written register.

Examples

  • 어떤 사람은 혼자 여행하는 것을 즐기는가 하면 어떤 사람은 그렇지 않다.

    While some people enjoy traveling alone, others do not.

  • 물가는 오르는가 하면 임금은 제자리걸음이다.

    While prices are rising, wages remain stagnant.

  • 도시는 발전하는가 하면 농촌은 점점 인구가 줄고 있다.

    While cities are developing, the rural population is steadily decreasing.
