   An expression used to indicate the situation or cause of the bad result mentioned in the following statement.

   뒤에 오는 말이 나타내는 좋지 않은 결과가 생기게 된 상황이나 원인을 나타내는 표현.

   ※ 주로 앞의 말이 부정적인 영향을 미치는 상황에서, 동사 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

Examples

• 시험지를 빨리 내라고 재촉하는 통에 이름 쓰는 걸 잊고 말았다.

  Because they kept rushing us to turn in our test papers, I forgot to write my name.

• 남편은 항상 밤 늦게나 집에 오는 통에 아이들 자는 얼굴만 보기 일쑤이다.

  Because my husband always comes home so late at night, he usually only gets to see the kids' sleeping faces.

• 아이들이 시끄럽게 떠드는 통에 집중이 안 된다.

  I can't concentrate because the kids are being so noisy.

• 영화가 영 재미없는 통에 지루해서 하품이 다 나왔다.

  The movie was so boring that I ended up yawning out of sheer tedium.

• 지수 씨, 오늘 피곤해 보이네요. 네. 아이가 밤새 우는 통에 전혀 못 잤어요.

  Ms. Jisu, you look tired today. Yes, my baby cried all night, so I couldn't sleep at all.
