   An expression used to indicate that the speaker will choose the following content, because the content of the preceding statement is less satisfactory.

   앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 내용이 뒤에 오는 말의 내용보다 마음에 차지 않기 때문에 뒤의 내용을 선택함을 나타내는 표현.

   ※ 'ㄹ'을 제외한 받침 있는 동사와 형용사 뒤에 붙여 쓴다.

Examples

• 이런 취급을 받을 바에 다른 곳으로 이직을 하겠다.

  Rather than be treated like this, I'd rather change jobs.

• 하루 종일 누워만 있을 바에 차라리 밖으로 나가자.

  Rather than lie around all day, let's just go outside.

• 일을 하면서 불평만 늘어놓을 바에 차라리 하지를 마.

  If you're just going to complain the whole time you work, don't bother doing it at all.

• 지수는 혼자 점심을 먹을 바에 그냥 점심을 먹지 말아야겠다고 생각했다.

  Jisu thought that rather than eat lunch alone, she'd just skip lunch altogether.

• 헤어진 애인에게 연락하고 싶은데 어떻게 할까? 하고 후회할 바에 그냥 연락하지 마.

  I want to contact my ex — what should I do? Rather than do it and regret it, just don't contact them.

• 기왕 일을 할 바에 웃으면서 하자.

  If we're going to do the work anyway, let's do it with a smile.
